This moray eel was recently identified as natural predator of the Lionfish Pterois miles in its native habitat in the Red Sea. Feeds mostly on cephalopods, fishes, and crustaceans.

Color yellowish, densely mottled with dark brown; front of head purplish grey; posterior margins of fins yellow-green; gill opening in a black blotch. Juveniles sometimes bright yellow with brown blotches

G. flavimarginatus is found in the Indo-Pacific Oceans at depths to 150 m. Its length is up to 7.87 feet (240 cm) however mostly spotted in a length around 120cm.
