Getting children used to water as early as possible is a very important part of the child’s development and getting a feel for water and of course for the environment and nature. This works best with professional help!
The water nose reflex in children is far more pronounced than in adults, which is one of the reasons why it is easier to teach children to swim, snorkel and dive than compare to teach adults.
Every baby has an innate breathing protection reflex, which means that it automatically holds its breath underwater. This reflex, also known as the diving reflex, is triggered when the face comes into contact with water; the stimulation of the parasympathetic system stops breathing and thus protects the airways from the ingress of water.
In addition, the pulse (heartbeat) is slowed down and the blood circulation is centralized, which saves the body oxygen consumption and allows it to survive longer.
Kids diving masks have some important functions that you should know about!
A Kids diving mask is an item of diving equipment that enables divers, freedivers, and snorkelers, as well as swimmers, to see clearly underwater.
Light refraction
When the human eye is in direct contact with water, in contrast to air, the light entering the eye is refracted at a different angle and the eye cannot focus the light and thus we see blurred, when opening our eyes underwater .
When light hits water it is refracted and enters the water at a different angle, the same thing happens again when the light re-enters the mask, therefore objects under water appear about 33% larger and 25% closer.
By providing an air space in front of the eyes that is created by a mask, the light enters our eyes “normally” and the eye can focus properly.
However, due to the double refraction of light into the water and then into the mask, everything is seen 33% larger and 25% closer than it is in reality.
This is very easy to depict with a pencil in a glass of water. Above the water, the pencil appears in its normal size, but in the water it appears 33% larger and 25% closer
The same thing happens of course when we wear a mask underwater!
Another reason why divers mostly exaggerate the size of the fish they saw! 😉
Depth acts as a color filter
Always wondered why water appears blue? Here is the answer!
When the diver descends, the water acts as a color filter and, from a depth of approx. 5m, eliminates the red end of the visible spectrum of sunlight that enters the water, with only the blue end of the spectrum remaining at depths over 30m is why water appears blue.
Eventually, depending on the depth and clarity of the water, all sunlight will be blocked and the diver will have to rely on artificial light sources to see underwater.
PVC, rubber or silicone sealing lip on a mask?
You should buy a mask with a silicone lip seal as it seals a lot better than rubber or PVC lip seals.
There are rubber sealing lip masks on the market, but the sealing is also very poor, as it is with the PVC sealing lip.
Another advantage of the silicone masks is that they have no odor.
The silicone masks are a bit more expensive, but it is always worthwhile if the mask seals well underwater and you don’t have to constantly blow out or deflate the mask.

Construction of a Kids diving mask
Diving masks can have a single or double lens pane made of safety glass (Tempered glass). Silicone sealing lips to achieve a watertight seal with the diver’s face and a mask body made of a dimensionally stable material.
Some two-lens masks allow the user to swap out the existing lenses and replace them with prescription lenses. Some companies have these lenses in stock to use in certain masks. If the prescription lenses have to be specially made, you can go to the optician with your mask and have it made there.
In the case of free diving masks, which must have a small volume in order to minimize the pressure change occurring with depth, the lenses can be made of polycarbonate plastic.
Because freediving masks are so small, they can sometimes also be used as Kids diving masks.
Each mask should have an easily adjustable mask strap system.
Trying on a Kids diving mask
Divers often test if a mask fits properly by placing it on their face without using the maskstrap and gently inhaling through their nose. If the mask sticks to the face unaided, it means no air is being drawn in and the fit is good. But in the end you will only know whether it fits when you wear your mask in the water.
A nose pocket on a mask is important to equalize the pressure inside the mask.
Diving masks must be constructed in such a way that the diver can exhale through the nose into the mask in order to compensate for the increasing pressure with increasing depth in the mask in order to prevent mask barotrauma (Mask Squeeze)
The nose pocket of the mask must be flexible so that the diver can perform a pressure equalization maneuver such as the Valsalva or the Frenzel maneuver, which is used to equalize pressure in the middle ear.
Pressure equalization of the ears
Everyone has dipped so deep that they felt the pressure on their ears! You can also feel this when you drive up a mountain or sit on a plane! On the way up we don’t have to do anything because the ears open by themselves. On the way down it can happen that you have to move the jaw from side to side to bring the eardrum back into its natural position! This is due to the increasing and decreasing air pressure that surrounds us!
However, the water has a much higher pressure than the air and increases very quickly when diving! E.g. at a depth of 10m we already have twice the pressure as on the surface! Therefore the pressure in the ears must be equalized as early as possible in order to avoid injuries to the eardrum!
There are several methods to achieve pressure equalization!
Valsalva method (the easiest for underwater)
You keep your nose closed with your thumb and forefinger. Now you press air against the blocked nose without letting air out. The air thus takes the easiest route through the Eustachian tube into the middle ear and pushes the eardrum back into its normal position!

Frenzel Method
You imagine that you are about to lift a heavy weight. The body reflexively seals off the vocal cords during such a project.
Now press the nostrils together with thumb and forefinger of one hand, at the same time make a K-sound. This causes the back of the tongue and the larynx to push upwards.
When done correctly, the nostrils expand and the Adam’s apple rises at the same time. Essentially, the Frenzel method has two decisive advantages: On one hand, breathing can be continued and, furthermore, the backflow of the blood is not influenced by hardly any exertion.
Toynbee Method
To do this, the nostrils are pressed together with thumb and forefinger of one hand, while at the same time swallowing. The resulting pressure in the neck muscles opens both Eustachian canals.
The big disadvantage of this technique is:
If you miss the right moment to equalize pressure during a rapid descent, opening the Eustachian tubes becomes increasingly difficult. So you run the risk of suffering a barotrauma, so you should choose this method carefully and receive appropriate training beforehand or practice the technique extensively.
No ear equalization has to be done on the ascent!
The overpressure that arises in the inner ear through the ascent is released via the Eustachian tube and breathing, since the eardrum can only bend inwards and not outwards, you can only hear the soft cracking in the ear during the ascent.
Mask pressure equalization
The same pressure ratio as in your ears also happens inside the mask as it is an air volume, when you descend and ascend, but it is easier to equalize the pressure there. If you feel pressure on your face from your mask while descending, simply exhale through your nose into the mask. No pressure equalization has to be made when surfacing.
One way purge valve under the nose
Some masks have a one way purge valve which sits under the nose to blow out any water that has entered. The diver simply holds the mask upright and exhales through the nose. While this feature is common in snorkeling, it is less preferred by divers as the valve may fail at depth and allow water to continually enter the mask.
Clearing Mask underwater
A simple and effective way to clear the mask underwater is to look down, place a finger on the top of the frame on either side and slowly look up as you exhale through your nose. The trick is not to blow out air through your mouth, but rather to exhale everything through your nose. Due to the increased pressure created in the mask, the water is pushed outwards.
Mask Sets
Sometimes masks are sold in conjunction with snorkels and / or flippers. Be careful: snorkel masks in sets are often of low quality, may not have real safety glass but plastic lenses and are often PVC or rubber sealing lip masks.
Anti fogging of the mask lenses
To prevent a mask from fogging up due to condensation on the glass pane, many divers spit into their mask and distribute it over the glass pane. The mask is then washed out with water shortly before putting it on, so that the mask does not fog up inside. Important tip: the less you exhale through your nose, the less the mask will fog up.
There are commercial products that can be used as an alternative to the saliva method.
Prescription in mask lenses
Some two-lens masks allow the user to swap out the existing lenses and replace prescription lenses. Some companies have these lenses in stock to use in certain masks. If the glasses have to be specially made, you can go to the optician with the mask and have it made there.
Divers can use contact lenses in the mask, but must keep their eyes closed when removing the mask underwater to avoid losing the lenses.
Removing and replacing the mask underwater is a basic skill taught to all divers so that the diver can overcome water intruding or remove the mask without panic.
Jump into the water while wearing a mask
When entering the water while wearing the mask, the diver must put one hand over the mask so as not to lose it due to the rapid flow of water that occurs.
Alternatively, a diver can jump into the water with the mask held in hand and then put it on inside the water, or use an approach such as “forward roll” in which the diver rolls head first into the water, which does not result in a rapid flow of water but is still a good idea to hold onto the mask.
Clean care and store mask
Kids diving masks should always be rinsed inside and outside with clean, fresh water after each use and dried off after washing.
Kids diving masks should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time as ultraviolet light attacks the silicone. A well-cared for mask will last for many years.
Most masks come with a hard plastic box. However, in case you want a different fit or your hard plastic container is broken, there are alternatives like these soft mask bags.
