Well… I did it.
After a lot of thinking (and a bit of internal debate), I finally upgraded my camera setup and bought the Sony A7R V — Sony’s current flagship high-resolution mirrorless camera. And yes, it feels just as exciting as it sounds.
From A7R III to A7R V — A Big Step?
I’ve been shooting with the Sony A7R III for quite a while now, and honestly, it’s still an amazing camera. Reliable, sharp, and more than capable for both landscape and wildlife photography.
But the A7R V takes things to a whole new level.
The improved autofocus, especially with AI-based subject recognition, is a game changer — particularly for wildlife photography. Animals are unpredictable, and getting sharp focus exactly where you want it makes a massive difference.
Then there’s the resolution. While the A7R III already delivered great detail, the A7R V pushes it even further. Cropping flexibility? Insane. Perfect for those moments when your subject is just a bit too far away — which, if you shoot wildlife, you know happens all the time.
My Current Setup
Right now, my go-to lenses are:
- 150–600mm Lens → My absolute favorite for wildlife. This is where the new autofocus really shines
- 24–70mm G Lens → My everyday, all-rounder. Landscapes, travel, general photography — it rarely leaves my camera.

The Big Question: Should I Sell the A7R III?
Now comes the real dilemma.
Do I keep my A7R III as a backup… or sell it?
On one hand:
- It’s still a fantastic camera
- Having a second body is incredibly useful (especially for wildlife or travel)
- Less lens switching = less missed shots
On the other hand:
- It’s a lot of money just sitting there
- The A7R V basically replaces it in every way
- Selling it could help fund future gear (you know how that goes 😅)
